Who to Engage with on Social Media

Engaging on Social Media is where you interact with your followers, competitors, and potential clients by commenting, sharing, and saving their content. Social Media platforms want you to be an active member, not just in sharing your own content but communicating and celebrating others’ content too. Engaging might seem like an annoying and pointless task but trust me, it does pay off! In this article, I will share my top tips for how to engage and start getting noticed online.

Your own content:

The first place to start engaging is within the comment section of your own content. Any time someone comments on your videos or images, you need to respond. Even if someone leaves a “heart” emoji, it is important that you still interact with them. How to do this, is by either making a statement or asking a question. If someone shares their opinion or says they like your post, ask them to elaborate. What did they like most about it or how did it help them? If they leave a simple emoji, then respond by thanking them and encourage them to follow for more great content.

Your Competitors Content:

“Keep your friends close but your enemies closer” right? Engaging with your competitors is not about them, but about their followers. They are your competitors because they have the customers you want, so why not use their content to get your name out there too! When engaging with a competitor, it is important that you show you are an expert in that particular industry. Share your opinion on their posts but make yourself seem like you know even more than they do (not in an overly obnoxious way though) Once you have engaged on their post directly, it is now time to communicate with their audience. Reply directly to their customers’ comments by acknowledging and agreeing with them, share your opinion, or ask them questions! This is a great way to start getting recognized by your ideal customer base.

Your Complimentary Content:

There are plenty of brands out there that will compliment yours. These are businesses that are in your industry or a similar one but don’t compete with you directly. For example, if you are in the makeup industry, a hairdresser would be a complementary business. Engaging with these types of businesses is really important as their audience could be yours too! Unlike your competitors, a complimentary brand is more likely to promote your content and engage back with you. Showing support to a complimentary brand could also result in a partnership or collaboration, which could be extremely beneficial to your business.

Your Audiences Content:

Now that you know your competitors & complimentary brands audiences, make them your audience too by engaging directly with their content. Set a time limit of 10-15 minutes, go into your competitors’ follower list, and make your way down through it. Click into each profile and comment on their posts. This is a great way to get noticed by your potential customers. You can also do this with your own followers, except go the extra mile by sharing content of theirs that you like and aligns with your values as a business. Do not engage with accounts that aren’t active or that don’t align with your business values.

Your industries content:

Make a list of keywords that relate to your business. Each day choose 5-10 of those keywords and input them into your platform's search bar, one at a time. Now engage with the posts that appear using that keyword or hashtag. Ensure you only engage with posts you genuinely like and agree with. Again, share your opinion, ask questions or make a positive statement. If you comment on 10 posts for each keyword, you will have engaged with 50-100 posts in no time. Dedicate time to this every single day and you will start seeing results!

Top Tip: Remember to always be yourself and add value each time you engage on Social Media
